January 20th may have started out as an ordinary day in the classroom for Mr. Wade and his grade six students at Bicentennial School, but it ended with a surprise by some special visitors.

KidsFest teamed up with official sponsor Grand & Toy and the Halifax Rainmen basketball team to recognize the Halifax teacher for going above and beyond the call of duty as an educator.  As part of a gift package, Mr. Wade received a new desk chair and tote bags full of school supplies from Grand & Toy, as well as basketballs and tickets to the following Rainmen home game for the entire class.

“The Grand & Toy Grand Gesture is a perfect way to reflect and celebrate the heart of the people of Halifax and to say thank you to extraordinary people who make this city a true community,” said Brian Warren, KidsFest’s Founder and Executive Director.
 
“Teachers play an essential role in shaping our future generation. We know that teachers buy additional school supplies using their own money. Grand & Toy saw an opportunity to not only provide them with these much needed supplies but also celebrate their invaluable impact on education,” said Natasha Renaud of Grand & Toy.

“The Grand Gesture was put together to give back to teachers who give so much to the students they teach, and we are so proud to be part of this new program,” said Halifax Rainmen Owner Andre Levingston.

Jason Wade was nominated by his colleagues who say he has a “magical” quality in his teaching skills. He infuses great energy and joy into his work and as a self-educator inspires his students to find joy in lifelong learning.  Jason also encourages his students to make a difference by assisting those in need both within the school and outside in the greater community.

The call for submissions for the Grand & Toy Grand Gesture went out to the Halifax Regional School Board in December. Applications were reviewed by KidsFest, who will select two additional winners for the months of February and June.
